amsterdam you beauty…
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I took a trip to Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago. It was my second time visiting the beautiful city and I took my film camera along with me. Since starting my photography degree, I’ve totally fallen in love with shooting on film – 35mm specifically. So, I thought I’d share the photos I captured and talk a little bit through what we got up to. Although its gonna be a bit vague, as I think I’m gonna do a post recommending places to eat/things to see in the near future.
our hotel, wandering around…
We arrived around lunchtime on the Monday and headed straight to our hotel from the airport. We stayed at The Student Hotel in Amsterdam West, which was about 25 minutes from central via tram/metro. The hotel itself was really nice, of course it was very student friendly. The basket ball court you can see in the first photo was outside our hotel room which was pretty cool. The lobby had a pool table, table tennis and also foosball – so there was plenty to do. We kinda just wandered around on the first day, taking everything in and just getting an idea as to where things were.

van gogh museum and vondlepark…
On our third day, we ventured out to the Van Gogh museum. Its a short tram ride from Centraal Station and it was a lovely day when we went (as you can see). You actually have to book a time slot for the museum as they only have a certain amount of people in at any one time, which makes sense as its so popular. When we went to book the tickets, there was no space for about an hour and a half so we had to wait around. Which was absolutely fine as the weather was glorious and there is a huge field right opposite where we sat down and chilled.
Once we’d been around the Van Gogh museum, we grabbed some lunch and decided to head towards Vondelpark. Its not very far from the museum so we decided to walk rather than get the tram. We only wandered around a small portion of it, but from what we saw, it was beautiful. So many bikes! There was a small lake as well, which was really lovely. If you’re looking for somewhere nice to chill out, I’d highly recommend Vondelpark.

walking around central…
These photos above were taken from wandering around central. The row of houses at the bottom are the ‘famous’ ones you see on everybody’s Instagram who visits Amsterdam. However, some of them were covered in scaffolding which was a bit of a bummer. There were also so many pretty bikes parked up on bridges, especially this pink one I snapped a photo of. I honestly don’t know how people cycle around to be honest, I’d be so scared of riding into people 24/7! We also spent a lot of our time dodging people on bikes haha.

yummy breakfast and the red light district…
I honestly think one of my favourite parts of visiting Amsterdam, was the breakfast. There are so many gorgeous little cafe’s with delicious food. A place we visited more than once, was Ree7. A very Instagram friendly cafe/breakfast place. The American pancakes were absolutely delicious and the interior was just, everything haha! I don’t want to mention too much about the other places we visited, as I want to do a post dedicated to it.
Another really interesting place in Amsterdam, is the Red Light District. I’m so fascinated by this area, honestly and have a lot of respect for the women that do what they do. Its like nothing you’d ever see anywhere else and I guess thats what so fascinating about it. We also went into ‘Red Light Secrets’, which is a museum dedicated to the Red Light District. It shows you what inside one of the rooms would look like, why the women do it, how they get into it etc. There is also a confession wall at the end which is absolutely hilarious, its worth going in just for that to be honest!
So, those are the photos I got on film of Amsterdam. I definitely want to do a post recommending places to eat/things to see, as this post was more of a general chat about what we got up to and just sharing the photos I got on 35mm.
Have you ever been to Amsterdam?
