Well, it looks like we’re all going to be staying inside for a lil while doesn’t it?! On a serious note, we all should be staying inside as much as possible, so I’ve put together some of my favourite rom com’s to keep you occupied whilst you’re social distancing!
01. Notting Hill
I watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago and was so obsessed, I watched it again the next day. Its the story of an average guy who owns a book shop in Notting Hill and he ends up meeting famous actor Anna Scott who he admires. Events unravel and they get close to one another. I’m going to stop there as I don’t want to ruin anything, but it features Hugh Grant (young Hugh may I add) and Julia Roberts. What more could you want?
02. 10 Things I Hate About You
Another 90s classic, featuring the one and only Heath Ledger. I feel like this is such a complicated storyline to try and explain but very easy to understand once you watch it haha. Basically, the story revolves around an angsty teenage girl who has no interest in dating. Her sister is the polar opposite and wants desperately to date but their Father sets out some rules whereby Bianca (younger sister) can’t date unless Kat (angsty older sister) does. I’ll leave it at that, but its a movie full of emotions – a good ‘un!
03. A Cinderella Story
I couldn’t make this list without including this absolute gem of a movie. It follows the same story as Cinderella, whereby a girl gets taken in by her ‘evil’ Stepmother as her parents passed away. She’s not part of the popular crowd at school but meets someone online who turns out to be the most popular boy in school. She sneaks out to the schools’ Halloween ball and meets him, but she is hiding under a mask and has to leave before he finds out her identity. This movie features Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, and is honestly such a classic.
04. Four Weddings And A Funeral
Another Hugh Grant film and a bloody good one. As the title suggests, there are four weddings and a funeral. It starts off with the first wedding, where Hugh Grant (the main character) meets a girl who takes his fancy. They spend a night together but sadly she has to leave to head back to America. They then bump into each other again a year or so later and complications arise. I absolutely adore this film – definitely one to watch if you haven’t seen it already.
05. When Harry Met Sally
An encounter between two graduates (Harry and Sally) where they form a short term friendship and then meet again 5 years later where their friendship grows. They are later forced to address how they feel towards one another. This is such a classic and I can’t believe I hadn’t seen it until a few months ago.
Alex Hitchens is a ‘professional date doctor’ giving men advice on how to woo women. He meets a girl who takes his fancy and all is going well until she discovers what he does. Alex Hitchens is played by Will Smith, so whats not to love about this?
07. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before
A modern day rom com, but a good one at that. The main character Lara Jean writes private letters to boys who she has loved and stores them in a box in her cupboard. One night when she is hanging out with her younger sister Kitty, she discovers Lara’s hidden box of letters. The following day at school a former crush Peter Kavinsky lets Lara know he was mailed a letter and it was from her.
08. Along Came Polly
This movie starts off with main character Reuben getting married and heading off on his honeymoon with his new wife. Whilst on their honeymoon, his new bride sleeps with a scuba diving instructor which of course causes Reuben to leave. Once back home, he bumps into a girl from his past named Polly and their relationship blossoms despite them being an odd pairing.
09. 50 First Dates
I haven’t watched this movie for ages but its such a good ‘un. A marine veteran (played by Adam Sandler) falls for an art teacher who has no short-term memory. He has to win her over every single day, hence it being 50 first dates. It’s such a wholesome film.
10. Legally Blonde
I can’t believe I hadn’t seen this film until recently. Reese Witherspoon plays protagonist Elle, a rich valley girl who is expecting her boyfriend to propose to her. When he doesn’t and tells her that he is looking for a smarter girl since he is off to Harvard, she works her hardest and manages to also get into Harvard. I feel like this is such an empowering film and you’re continually rooting for Elle.
